August 4, 2007 THE TAMPA BAY DEVIL RAYS ARE A
DISGRACE
This is the 10th year that the Tampa Bay Devil Rays have been in
existence, and with the exception of 2004, when they finished 4th in the
American League East, all the other years they have finished 5th and last.
This year is no exception. They currently have a 41-67 record for a .380
losing percentage, and in last place again. If they keep this losing pace
up, the Tampa Bay Devil Rays will end up with only 62 wins.
Their 10 year record is as follows:
2007 - 41-67 (.380) As of August 3
2006 - 61-101 (.377)
2005 - 67-95 (.414)
2004 - 70-91 (.435)
2003 - 63-99 (.389)
2002 - 55-106 (.342)
2001 - 62-100 (.383)
2000 - 69-92 (.429)
1999 - 69-93 (.426)
1998 - 63-99 (.389)
If the Devil Rays end up with only 62 wins, as projected, they will have 1
win less than their inaugural season in 1999. That is pathetic. You
hear the excuses that they are in the AL East, and have to play against the New
York Yankees, and the Boston Red Sox 19 times each per year. You also hear
that they cannot compete with the Yankees and Red Sox payrolls. Let's
analyze this. Yes, the Devil Rays have to play 19 times each against the
Yankees and the Red Sox, but so do the Toronto Blue Jays, and the Baltimore
Orioles, and they both do not have the futile 10 year record that the Devil Rays
have posted. As far as the payrolls are concerned, forget about the
Yankees and the Red Sox for a moment, and take them out of the mix, and against
every other team in Major League Baseball, the Devil Rays still have the worst
record in the game.
What is the problem?
Obviously, if they spent more money, they would be competitive, but that
aside, I firmly believe that ownership and management just do not have the
desire to win. Joe Maddon, the current field manager, could be the worst
skipper I have ever seen. The Devil Rays have some of the best young
talent in baseball, and the "braintrust" for the Devil Rays are not exploiting
their potential. It seems that they have their players in the mode of
"running under water", they seem lax and show little hustle. This is a
direct result of management. Hey Joe, show some emotion, let us know there
is a pulse there, show us that you know how to strategize. It seems you
just sit there and let them play. Teach them how to bunt, do the
unexpected, trade for some pitching. Just do something positive to get to
.500. At the rate this team is going, I am surprised anyone ever attends
their games. It actually is a good thing that they do play the Yankees and
Red Sox so many times. It is the only time the Devil Rays have a decent
home crowd.
As long and Joe Maddon remains as the Devil Rays Manager, I do not see
them improving at all. These Rays will always be swimming against the
tide.

Length of Piniella's suspension to be determined by MLB on
Monday
CHICAGO -- Chicago
Cubs manager Lou Piniella was suspended indefinitely and fined an
undisclosed amount by Major League Baseball on Sunday for his latest
dirt-kicking tirade against an umpire.
Piniella was ejected in the eighth inning of Saturday's 5-3 loss to the Atlanta
Braves.
After Angel
Pagan was thrown out trying to steal third on a pitch that bounced away from
the catcher, Piniella stormed out of the dugout and kicked dirt as he argued and
tossed his cap, leading to his ouster by third-base umpire Mark Wegner.
MLB also said Piniella made contact with Wegner during the outburst -- which
Piniella denied.
Piniella began serving his suspension Sunday. The length of Piniella's
suspension will be determined Monday after a meeting with John McHale Jr., the
MLB executive vice president for administration.
"I wasn't expecting anything until the early part of the week,"
said Piniella, who has been known to kick dirt and toss bases since he started
managing in 1986.
He planned to watch Sunday's game from his office, with bench coach Alan
Trammell managing the team during the suspension.
Piniella's outburst came one day after catcher Michael
Barrett and pitcher Carlos
Zambrano fought in the dugout and clubhouse, leaving Barrett with a cut on
his lower lip that required six stitches at a hospital and a bruise below his
left eye.
The Cubs had lost six straight entering Sunday's series finale against the
Braves, but the frustration that had been percolating this season.
"It all starts with playing bad baseball," general manager Jim
Hendry said. "When you play as poorly as we have now for a few weeks time,
a lot of frustration sets in because you do have a lot of guys that care and a
lot of guys that expect to win. Nobody's anything but extremely disappointed,
frustrated with where we're at."
The same fundamental lapses that marked the past few seasons under former
manager Dusty Baker are plaguing the Cubs even after their offseason overhaul.
They hired Piniella. They committed $300 million to retain and sign players,
adding free-agent prize Alfonso
Soriano. But the results are all too familiar for a franchise that last won
a championship in 1908 and has not been to the World Series since 1945.
A team that thought it was a playoff contender after winning 66 games last
year entered Sunday's game at 22-31.
Piniella says he and management are on the same page, but this clearly has
been a difficult season for him. His frustration seems to grow with every
mistake on the bases and on defense -- and there have been plenty lately.
There was a 9-4 loss to Florida on Tuesday in which Mark
DeRosa got thrown out trying to go to third on a grounder to short and
Michael Barrett got picked off second. A day later, they lost 9-0.
And after an off day on Thursday, things took a turn for the worse. Besides
the altercation between Zambrano and Barrett, the Cubs committed several
mistakes on defense in an 8-5 loss to Atlanta.
Hendry said the fight is "a fixable situation. It happened, it's
over."

Billy Donovan informed the Magic and the University of Florida over the
weekend that he had second thoughts about agreeing to be Orlando's head
coach, but it's unclear if the NBA team will let him go.
Orlando has a signed contract from Donovan and are making a decision
as to whether or not to let him out of the five-year, $27.5 million deal
that he signed Thursday, multiple sources told ESPN.com Sunday.
If the Magic do let Donovan out of the deal, they have to decide
whether to enforce a financial penalty. Both sides aren't talking publicly
since there are legal issues involved in such a decision.
Donovan's hiring on Thursday prompted the sale of 200 Magic season
tickets by Friday afternoon. Magic communications director Joel Glass
confirmed that number after Friday's news conference introducing Donovan
to a standing ovation from the entire on-site Magic organization at the
RDV Sportsplex in Orlando. Losing Donovan as coach would likely be a
public relations hit to a franchise that needed a pop.
Donovan is coming off winning back-to-back national titles at
Florida, the first time that has occurred since Duke did it in 1991-92.
Donovan, who turned 42 Wednesday, agonized over the decision to accept the
Magic offer after first being approached last week.
Florida athletic director Jeremy Foley flew to Richmond, Va., on
Saturday to meet with Donovan's former assistant, VCU head coach Anthony
Grant, about the opening. But multiple sources confirmed that the plane
was on the ground for less than an hour. Foley left without Grant aboard.
Over the weekend, multiple sources said Grant was the top choice but
that both he and Donovan wanted to make sure that all of their respective
staffs were taken care of before any move was made.
Multiple sources said that the decision now rests in the hands of
the Magic. A final decision could come as early as Monday.
On Friday, Donovan was emphatic about why he ultimately made the
choice. He said that he wanted a new challenge and saw the proximity to
his home in Gainesville and the young stars on the Magic roster like Dwight
Howard and Jameer
Nelson as well as $10-13 million in salary cap space as a primary
reason for jumping at this job.

Yanks, D-backs agree on Unit trade
Deal needs Johnson to waive no-trade clause, ink extension
By Bryan Hoch / MLB.com
NEW YORK -- The Yankees are close to accommodating Randy Johnson's desire to
pitch closer to home, tentatively agreeing Thursday to a five-player trade with
the Arizona Diamondbacks.
The teams have informed the Commissioner's Office of the specifics of the
trade. A Yankees spokesman said they had no comment at this time, but the
D-backs issued a statement on Thursday evening.
"Earlier today we came to an agreement in principle with the New York
Yankees regarding Randy Johnson," said Arizona senior vice president and
general manager Josh Byrnes in a statement. "We have now been granted a
72-hour window from Major League Baseball to discuss Randy's contract status
with his representatives, Barry Meister and Alan Nero. We will respectfully
decline any comment during the negotiating window but will do so when there is
news to announce."
Multiple reports identified a package of four Diamondbacks players who
would be sent to the Yankees in exchange for the 43-year-old Johnson, who won 34
games over the past two seasons with New York. Johnson, coming off back surgery
performed in October, is owed $16 million for the 2007 season. The Yankees
reportedly included $2 million in the deal to help offset Johnson's 2007 salary.
Headed to the Yankees -- contingent upon Johnson waiving a no-trade clause
in exchange for a 2008 contract extension -- would be reliever Luis Vizcaino,
Minor League pitchers Ross Ohlendorf and Steven Jackson, plus Minor League
shortstop Alberto Gonzalez.
The package would accomplish the Yankees' goal of replinishing their farm
system with younger talent, much of it close to being ready for service at the
Major League level.
A series of negotiations gained steam after Johnson, who lives in the
Phoenix suburb of Paradise Valley, Ariz., noted his desire to be closer to his
home and family in a telephone call with Yankees general manager Brian Cashman.
Johnson pitched in Arizona from 1999 to 2004, including the D-backs' 2001
World Series victory over the Yankees. With New York, Johnson posted a record of
34-19, bringing his career total to 280 victories, but he was 0-1 with a 6.92
ERA in three postseason starts.
Vizcaino, 32, was a valuable reliever in Arizona's 2006 campaign. The
right-hander was 4-6 with a 3.58 ERA in 70 games for the Diamondbacks, walking
29 and striking out 72 while scattering 51 hits in 65 1/3 innings. He has also
played for the A's, Brewers and White Sox in eight seasons.
Ohlendorf, 25, was one of Arizona's more highly regarded pitching
prospects and had been considered a contender for the team's starting rotation
in 2007. Ohlendorf made 27 starts at Double-A Tennessee of the Southern League
last year, going 10-8 with a 3.29 ERA. In 177 2/3 innings, Ohlendorf struck out
125 and walked 29.
Jackson, one of Ohlendorf's Double-A rotation mates, is a 24-year-old
right-hander who went 8-11 with a 2.65 ERA in 24 starts, walking 45 and striking
out 125. Jackson struggled while representing the Diamondbacks in the Arizona
Fall League, going 0-2 with a 7.11 ERA in six starts for the Scottsdale
Scorpions.
Gonzalez, 23, was Tennessee's starting shortstop in 2006 and is reputed to
be a strong defensive player. He held his own against Southern League pitching,
batting .290 with six home runs and 50 RBIs in 129 games.
Without Johnson, the Yankees' projected rotation heading into Spring
Training would be comprised of Chien-Ming Wang, Andy Pettitte, Mike Mussina, Kei
Igawa and Carl Pavano.

EXCUSE MY RUDENESS, BUT..........
SHOULD NEW YORK YANKEE MVP, ALEX
RODRIGUEZ BE DROPPED TO EIGHTH IN THE LINEUP?
By Dr. Joseph A. Tedesco
Alex Rodriguez, All- Star Third Baseman, and reigning AL MVP for the New
York Yankees, has been struggling at late at bat. He seems very
tentative, not the same ARod that has won home run titles, rbi titles,
batting titles, and multiple MVP awards. The New York fans have been
booing him, and perhaps that is finally starting to get to him.
In this past 5 game series sweep of the Boston Red Sox, the numbers
that ARod put up with have been good for the mortal baseball player, but
they were not good enought for the game's highest paid performer. ARod
had 7 hits in 21 at bats for a very respectable .333 batting average.
he only had 2 doubles, 0 triples, and more importantly, no home runs.
He scored 5 runs, had 5 rbi's, had 5 walks, 4 strikeouts, and hit into 2
doubleplays. The important stat that stands out are the 17 runners
ARod left on base. Johnny Damon, Derek Jeter, Bobby Abreu, and Jason
Giambi, the top 4 Yankees in the lineup were getting on base at an amazing
rate in the Red Sox series. This meant that everytime ARod would come
to the plate, he always had runner on base. Leaving 17 runner on base
for a player of ARod's stature, is pathetic. He just seems like he is
pressing too much in those situations. My idea is to drop ARod to the
eighth position for a few games to take the heat off of him. Perhaps
that will help get him more relaxed and zoned in to what he should be doing.
Alex Rodriguez is still one of the best players in baseball, and will go
down as one of the game's greatest, but the Yankee brass should try to help
ARod now and take some of the pressure off.

EXCUSE MY RUDENESS, BUT..........
WHY ARE THERE SO MANY EXHIBITION PRO
FOOTBALL GAMES IN THE NFL?
Dr. Joseph A. Tedesco
Tedesco Sports Marketing
The NFL plays 16 regular season games. In their infinite wisdom, they
feel it necessary to play an additional 4 games in the pre season. We
all know the reason. It generates more revenue for each team and the
NFL. It also generates more injuries to players in games that do not
count. God forbid some marquee players get hurt in these meaningless
games - Peyton and Eli Manning, Tiki Barber, Big Ben of the Steelers, etc.
If any of these players would go down in these games, the NFL would wake up
and see how useless these games really are. The fans are forced to pay
for these games in their season ticket packages, and for the most part, no
name players even play enough for the fans to get their monies worth.
The fans should let their feeling known and speak out against these poor
excuses of football games. Perhaps a good solution is to play 2 pre
season games and add 2 more games to the regular schedule. This would
satisfy the revenue problem for the teams, the fans would get to see 2
additional meaningful games, and the players do not have to worry about the
extra hardship of playing in a game that does not count.
Hopefully, the NFL will wake up and take heed of this problem. Hey
NFL, do the right thing.

EXCUSE MY RUDENESS, BUT..........
WHY DOES ALFONSO SORIANO BOUNCE FROM
ONE TEAM TO ANOTHER?
by Dr. Joseph A. Tedesco
Tedesco Sports Marketing
Alfonso Soriano, Washington National outfielder, just became the first
person in baseball history to record four 30-30 seasons in 5 years.
That means in one season he hit at least 30 home runs, and stole at least 30
bases. Since 1999, he is currently with his 3rd team, the Nationals, and
they are curently shopping him to other teams. He came up with the
Yankees in 1999, and had two 30-30 seasons with them, was traded to the
Texas Rangers in the ARod deal in 2004, spent two years there, and had one
30-30 season with them, then left for Nationals in 2006, and now has his 4th
30-30 season in 5 years.
What is his problem? Does he shower regularly? Is he a pain in the
butt to be around? Is he a disturbance in the clubhouse? Does he
make too much money? It probably is none of the above. It is the
baseball economics of today that Soriano has been caught up with. He
will be a free agent at the end of this year, and he will be the number one
player on everyone's shopping list--------everyone with enough money to
afford his talents.
It will be refreshing for Soriano, if he can make this his last stop, and
enjoy the fun part of baseball. Help a club win a title, and enjoy all
the accolades that go with it. The gypsy element of baseball is
starting to get old.

EXCUSE MY RUDENESS, BUT..........
DON'T THE RED SOX REALLY NEED A
STARTING PITCHER?
by Dr. Joseph A. Tedesco
Tedesco Sports Marketing
Yesterday's double-dip losses to the New York Yankees by the Boston Red Sox,
only goes to prove that the Red Sox need starting pitchers, more than they
needed to obtain Eric Hinske. The Red Sox starting staff, who the NESN
sports announcers proclaimed in the beginning of the year, was one of the
best in baseball, have not lived up to those lofty testamonials.
Curt Schilling is the only starting pitcher carrying his
own weight. His record is 14-5, with a 3.83 ERA, but even Schilling
has won only 1 game in his last 4 starts. For the ace of a staff, that
is not good. The big disappointment has been Josh Beckett,
who has a respectable 13-7 record, but a miserable ERA of 5.02. He
will be pitching today's matinee game against the Yankees, and Randy
Johnson. The problem is that Beckett has only won 1 game in his last 5
starts, and he is averaging over 7 runs given up in those games. Jon
Lester has a an impressive 6-2 record and a 4.72 ERA. The
problem is that he goes too deep in his counts, does not have good command,
and does not trust his "stuff'. He has won 1 game in his last 6
starts. Jason Johnson, who started yesterday's first
game of the doubleheader, has not won in his last 11 starts (which includes
his time with the Indians), and has an 0-4 record with the Red Sox (3-12
overall) and a 6.35 ERA. The reward for his ineptness, was to be sent
down to the minors right after the first game yesterday, so the Red Sox can
activate relief pitcher, Keith Foulke. David Wells,
just off the DL, is 2-2, with a lofty 6.06 ERA, but you never know
which Wells is going to show up to pitch at each game. At his age, he
cannot be counted on, and his durability is suspect, but I am sure he still
has a few gems left in his arm.
Tim Wakefield, the likeable knuckleballer who is still on
the DL, is only 7-8 with a 4.14 ERA, but has not pitched since July 17.
So in review of the starting pitching, the Red Sox have Curt Schilling and
nobody else. Beckett - 5.02 ERA, Lester - 4.72 ERA, Johnson - 6.35
ERA, Wells - 6.06 ERA, and Wakefield - 4.14 ERA. This means the Red
Sox offense need to score at least 5 runs every game just to keep it close.
That is a tall order, even for the mighty offense of the Sox. The Red
Sox have scored 673 runs in 121 games for an average of 5.56 runs per game.
They will consitently need to continue to score runs at this pace just to
remain in the race. The Boston Red Sox team ERA is 4.77, good for 11th
place in the 14 team American League. That means their run
differential (5.56 minus 4.77) is plus .79 runs per game.
Compare that to the White Sox plus 1.11, the Yankees plus 1.24, and the
Tigers plus 1.39
The only solution for Theo Epstein, is to try and find another quality
starter. You say, easier said than done? Of course it is, but
Theo is considered one of the shrewdest young minds of the game. His
focus clearly should be on starting pitching, not offense. The offense
is there, the pitching is not, therefore, go out an get a pitcher. The
Sox have the money, so they should use it wisely.
Hey Theo, remember ------ starting pitching, starting pitching,
starting pitching.

NEW YORK YANKEES CAN'T HIT THE FASTBALL
by Dr. Joseph A. Tedesco
For time in memoriam, the New York Yankees have been a notorious fastball
hitting team. With the losses of Hideke Matsui, and Gary Sheffield, the
Yankees have finally succumbed to the heater. ARod, Jeter, Damon, and
even Giambi, are having problems catching up to the high hard one. The
Yankees have always historically been able to hit the 90-95 mph fastball.
They seem very human against the likes of Papelbon, Schilling, Beckett,
Santana, Liriano, KRod, and others in that elite company. The Yanks seem
to do well against the off speed pitchers, the same style of pitching that has
always caused them problems in the past. Mr. Mattingly, if you read
this, please get the troops back on track, and find a solution to the high
hard one.

NEW YORK YANKEES CLOSER, MARIANO RIVERA GETS HIS 400TH SAVE
by Dr. Joseph A. Tedesco
Tedesco Sports Marketing would like to congratulate New York Yankees
closer, Mariano Rivera on nothcing his 400th save this past Sunday
against the World Champion Chicago White Sox. Rivera is the fourth
closer to reach 400 saves. He joins the elite group of Lee Smith
(478), Trevor Hoffman (460), and John Franco (424) to reach this lofty
height. When interviewed after the game, Rivera said, "It's
amazing, amazing to even think about it, I've been blessed."
Opposing manager, Ozzie Guillen, said of Rivera, "on the field and
off the field, Hall of Fame. Young people should look up to him.
He's the perfect player."

BUFFALO WILD WINGS - NOT A CUSTOMER FRIENDLY PLACE
by Dr. Joseph A. Tedesco
My fiance, Cristen and I recently visited the Buffalo Wild Wings Restaurant at
Gulf View Mall in New Port Richey, Florida, to get some wings, have a few
drinks, and watch the baseball game on the big screen TV's. We sat at
the bar, grabbed some menus, then we both ordered the drink that we are famous
for----Bacardi and Diet Coke in a tall glass and lots of limes. The
bartender then proceeded to make our drinks. When he returned, he had our
drinks in small glasses. I told him in a nice way that we had ordered
tall glasses, he then said that he is not allowed to give us tall glasses.
I told him, we did not want extra rum, we just like it with additional diet
coke, to cut the alcohol taste. He said it was against Company Policy to
give us a tall glass. We have travelled all over the world and have
never encountered anyone who refused to put our drinks in a tall glass.
I even told the bartender that we will pay extra, and he still refused.
I then asked him to see the Manager, and the Manager said the same thing, it
is against Company Policy, they even have this spelled out in the Company
Manual, the Manager said. I then queried him that their Corporate
actually had a meeting to discuss this? That's taking Micro-Managing to
another level. The Manager bascially told us tough luck in a nice way,
and said he couldn't do it for us. I told him thank you, and we are
never, never, never coming back. In today's corporate coditions, I
am sure Buffalo Wild Wings couldn't care one way or the other if we ever came
back. Maybe that is a statement as to what is happening with all the
corporate cookie-cutter chains. Customer service has taken a back seat
to corporate directives.
If any of you are considering to eat or drink at Buffalo Wild Wings, please
re-consider, and change your plans and go to the Wing House or Hooters, where
they actually care for their customers
If any of the Corporate Officers of Buffalo Wild Wings would like to discuss
this with me, feel free to contact me at (727) 858 0936.

AN OPEN LETTER TO MAJOR
LEAGUE BASEBALL AND COMMISIONER BUD SELIG - WHY ISN'T THE BABE'S NUMBER RETIRED
THROUGHOUT BASEBALL?
WHY ISN'T THE BABE'S NUMBER RETIRED THROUGHOUT
BASEBALL?
by Dr. Joseph A. Tedesco
www.tedescosports.com
Major League Baseball did the right thing a few years ago, when they retired
Hall of Famer, Jackie Robinson's number 42 throughout baseball. Jackie
Robinson broke the color barrier in the Major Leagues by becoming the first
African American to play in the majors with the Brooklyn Dodgers.
Now it is time for Baseball to do the right thing again. If anyone's
number should be retired, it is Babe Ruth's number 3. The Babe was the
most significant athlete of his or any other generation. People still
compare great feats by calling them "Ruthian". It is the Babe
that helped save baseball after the 1919 Black Sox Scandal, that almost killed
baseball as we know it. It is the Babe that singlehandedly took it upon
his shoulders to be the greatest ambassador of the greatest sport in the world.
We all know his records, his home runs, his lifetime batting average, his
"called shot" in the World Series, his gigantic eating and drinking
habits, his love for children, and his love for the game.
Hey Baseball, hey Mr. Selig, let's get with the program, and do the right
thing. The right thing is to retire Babe Ruth's Number 3 throughout the
baseball world.

DIRECTV - NESN - RED SOX PRE AND POST GAME SHOWS
by Dr. Joseph A. Tedesco
For many years, I have been watching DirecTV Satellite station 623, which is
the New England Sports Network(NESN). I have always tuned in before, and
after the Boston Red Sox telecasts to listen to the pre and post game shows,
which I have found very entertaining. In the last week, however, either
NESN or DirecTV, or both have decided to black these telecasts out. What
is the rationale behind this? Why, out of the blue, without any warning
or explanation, are the telecasts being blacked out. In a phone call
today to DirecTV, they said they do not know the reason, but
customers have been complaining, and they will look into it. Well,
what could possiblly make them take more than 1 minute to determine the
problem. This is just another case of bureaucratic mis-management that
nobody is telling anyone what is really happening. Just give us the
reason without running us around the proverbial "mulberry bush."
What is the reason why we are not able to see these telecasts? Enough is
enough. Why is anything being blacked out in the first place?
Is this not one of the reasons why we get DirecTV? If you are
experiencing the same problem, feel free to contact DirecTV and voice your
displeasure. Their toll free number is: 800

FORD MOTORS - ONE OF THE WORST TV COMMERCIALS EVER WITH
TAYLOR HICKS
by Dr. Joseph A. Tedesco
www. tedescosports.com
American Idol winner Taylor Hicks is starring in national commercials to
promote Ford Motor Company's "Drive on Us" year-end sales event.
Hicks is performing the song "Possibilities" in commercials
that began airing June 15. Are you kidding me? He might have won the
American Idol contest, but he looks, and acts like a big out of place bozo
doing those commercials. He is jumping and stomping, I think they are
trying to say he is dancing, and trying to scream the song
"Possibilities" at the same time. The only worst dancing I
have ever seen on TV is on "Seinfeld" when Elaine Benes is trying
dance at her office party. She was all thumbs, and so is Hicks, he is
actually worst that Elaine. Perhaps Paula Abdul, who has tutored some of
the best dancers in show business, should get with Mr. Hicks as soon as
possible, and give him some lessons.
What could Ford have been thinking with these spots? I used to like Ford
commercials, but they have a real stinker here. Taylor Hicks should go
back to the "hicks".

PATHETIC N.Y. YANKEES LINEUP
by Dr. Joseph A. Tedesco
Today's N.Y. Yankee lineup against the World Champion Chicago White Sox, was
the worst I can remember in almost 20 years. As everyone is aware of,
the Yankees have key injuries to All-Stars Gary Sheffield, right fielder,
Hideki Matsui, left fielder, and aggravating injuries to Johnny Damon, center
fielder, and Robinson Canoe, All-Star second baseman. As a result of all
of these injuries, the Yankees fielded the following lineuup against the
current World Champions today:
Leading off and playing left field, Melky Cabrera, a player
that has played a total of 62 Major League games, and was thrown to the wolves
earlier this year when Masutsui went down with an injury. Batting second
is All-Star Derek Jeter, enough said there. ditto Jason
Giambi batting third, and Alex Rodriguez batting
fourth. It starts getting to be a problem with catcher Jorge
Posada moving up to the fifth position, where he usually never
occupies. Batting sixth is Aaron Guiel, the right
fielder, who has a total of 894 Major League at bats under his belt in
his so far, undistinguished career. Batting seventh is Andy Phillips,
first baseman, with a total of 221 at bats in his short major league career.
Batting eighth is journeyman Miguel Cairo, who has filled in
admirably so far for injured Yankees, but his is a utility player, and can't
be counted on to start in the long haul. Batting ninth and playing
center field for Johnny Damon is Bubba Crosby, a liftetime
.218 hitter with 234 career at bats. With all of the subs playing this
weekend, the Yanks managed to sweep the World Champs, and coupled with a Red
Sox defeat at the hands of the Oakland A's moved to a tie in the loss column
with the Red Sox.
So far the Yanks have been doing it with some creditable starting pitching and
lights out relief from future Hall of Famer Mariano Rivera. Time will
only tell if GM Brian Cashman will pull the trigger on some outfield help, or
go with his unsung young guns.

SOX IN THE MIX FOR BOBBY ABREU? |

RED SOX IN THE MIX FOR BOBBY ABREU?
by Dr. Joseph A. Tedesco
It was mentioned yesterday on the FOX Major League Baseball Game of the
Week, that the Boston Red Sox are in the hunt for Philiadelphia Phillies
star outfielder, Bobby Abreu. I wonder why the interest on the Red
Sox side? Where are they going to put him? The Red Sox have
Manny Ramirez in left, so certainly not there, they have newly traded
for Cocoa Crisp in centerfield, and long time Red Sox veteran, Trot
Nixon in right field. I don't think any of them would accept being
second fiddle to Bobby Abreu. I don't understand why Joe Buck and
Tim McCarver, annnoucers for Fox, did not mention the log jam in the
outfield for the Red Sox, and explain how the Red Sox could actually use
Abreu. The Red Sox also have injured outfielder, Willie Moe Pena,
getting ready to join the active roster any day now.
In my opinion, the Red Sox really need another starting pitcher to go
with Curt Schilling and Josh Beckett. Tim Wakefield has not been
the reliable pitcher he once was, and who actually are the NO. 4 and 5
starting pitchers? Hey Red Sox, if you need anything, concentrate
on starting pitching. You are in first place now, so don't upset
the chemistry that go you there.

CHEVROLET - BASEBALL'S BIGGEST FAN?
by Dr. Joseph A. Tedesco
If you have been watching sports on TV in
the last month, you have probably heard the commercials for Chevrolet
saying on their "tag line" that "Chevrolet is baseball's
biggest fan". Well, how did they come to that conclusion.
I think I am their biggest fan, and you probably think you are, but to
blatantly come out on national TV and state that, that is bad
advertising, and false advertising. What makes them baseball's
biggest fan, and by what authority are they baseball's biggest fan.
Well, today I traveled to many Chevrolet
dealerships on the West Coast of Florida, and covertly and randomly,
as I could , asked 20 of their various employees the following easy to
medium baseball questions, just to see what kind of baseball fans the
employees Chevrolet actually are. Below are the 10 questions I
asked them, and to a person, not one got any question correct.
Please keep in mind that I only had a sample of 20 questions, but
still the same, none were answered correctly.
I pose the following question as to my
survey, Is Chevrolet baseball's biggest fan?, I don't think so.
I also think if you asked the Board of
Directors of Chevrolet(GM) the same question, they too, would have
terrible results.
1. As of today, this team is in first
place in the NL West
Answer: San Diego Padres
2. As of today, this team has the
worst record in baseball
Answer: Pittsburgh Pirates, winning
percentage of .341
3. This player will be the starting
shortstop for the NL in this years All Star Game
Answer: Jose Reyes, NY Mets
4. He was the NL Manager in the 2005
All Star Game
Answer: Tony LaRussa, St. Louis
Cardinals
5. What is David Ortiz' nickname
Answer: Big Papi
6. This player is the captain of the
Boston Red Sox
Answer: Jason Varitek
7. This player hold the record for
the most home runs in one season in the American League
Answer: Roger Maris, NY Yankees,
1961, 61 home runs
8. This player was famous for
saying, "Hit 'em where they ain't"
Answer: Hall of Famer, Wee Willie
Keeler
9. What was All Time Home Run King,
Hank Aaron's uniform number
Answer: 44
10, What city was the first All Star game played
Answer: Chicago
Also, commercials on TV state that "Baby Ruth" is the
official candy bar of Major League Baseball. I randomly asked 10
of my friends who are currently playing in the big leagues what their
favorite candy bar was and none said Baby Ruth. Many of them
said Snickers. Once again, the mighty advertising dollar is
brainwashing America.

June 18, 2006
This is an open email I sent today to Michael Kay, New York Yankees
announcer on the YES Network
Att: Michael Kay
Michael: I have been researching the
Yankees, and the uniform numbers that have been officially retired.
Everyone knows that 1 is Billy Martin, 3 is Babe Ruth, 4 is Lou Gehrig, 5 is
Joe DiMaggio, 7 is Mickey Mantle, 8 is Bill Dickey and Yogi Berra, 9 is Roger
Maris, 10 is Phil Rizzuto, 15 is Thurman Munson, 16 is White Ford, 23 is Don
Mattingly, 32 is Elston Howard, 37 is Casey Stengel, 44 is Reggie Jackson, and
the last number retired is 49 Ron Guidry. That is a total of 16 players
and 15 uniform numbers.
I have been a Yankee fan as far back as I can
remember, and I am very proud of all of their accomplishments. There are
however some other very important Yankees of yesteryear, many of whom are Hall
of Famers, that should merit the distinction of having their uniform numbers
retired. Earl Combs, who played center field from 1924 to 1935,
including the 1927 World Champion Yankees, has a .325 career batting average,
elected to the Hall of Fame in 1970, and his primary NY Yankee uniform number
was 1. Why isn't he part of the above elite retired number Yankees.
Lefty Gomez, star left handed pitcher for the Yankees from 1930 to 1942, won
20 games 4 times, won the pitching Triple Crown in 1934 and 1937, played
on 7 All-Star Teams, pitched in the World Series of 1937, 37, 38, and 39,
compiling a World Series record of 6 wins and 0 losses, and elected to the
Hall of Fame in 1972. His primary uniform number for the Yankees was 11.
How can you be better than Lefty Gomez? Red Ruffing, who pitched for the
Yankees from 1930 to 1942, All Star 6 times, pitched in the 1932, 36, 37, 38,
39, 41, and 42 World Series. He has 273 career victories, and 7
additional in the World Series. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in
1967, and his primary uniform number for the Yanks was 15.
There are others that also deserve having their
numbers retired, such as Tony Lazzeri, Herb Pennock, Willie Keeler, Waite
Hoyt, and Jack Chesbro. I still do not understand why Joe McCarthy, one
of the greatest Managers of all time is not included, along with Miller
Huggins. Huggins at least has a monument to his name in Monument Park.
Some of the above I mentioned did not have uniform numbers, in those cases I
am sure the Yankees can designate an honor for them.
Last but certainly not least, is Frank
Crosetti, whose life was a lesson in longevity. He played for the Yankees
for 17 season. He coached third base for the Yankees for 20 seasons. Total of
37 loyal years with the Bronx Bombers. He was married to his wife
Norma for 63 years and he lived to be 91. He appeared in 7 World Series,
collecting 20 hits in 115 at-bats with a home run, 11 RBI and a stolen base.
He played in the 1936 and 1939 All-Star games and led the American League in
at-bats (656) and stolen bases (27) in 1938. After retiring in 1948, he
was the Yankees' third-base coach for 20 years, taking part in 15 more World
Series. That is a total of 22 World Series with the Yanks. If anyone should
have his number 2 retired it is he.
Maybe you can bring this up with the Yankee
Brass, and hopeful they will do the right thing.
Thank you for your time and courtesy
Sincerely,
Dr. Joseph A. Tedesco, Ph. D.
